Melvin Eugene Tomlinson, 85, of Des Moines, died Thursday, August 6, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. He had been a resident of Norwalk Regency Care Center at the time of his death.

Melvin was born August 11, 1923 in Freeborn, Minnesota, the son of Charles and Meda (Thomas) Tomlinson and raised in Cambridge, Iowa. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps as a Gunnery Instructor. He had worked as an inspector for Delivan Manufacturing. Melvin was united in marriage to Valora Jean Hoel on July 1, 1956. Valora preceded Melvin in death in 2000. Melvin was a member of the First United Methodist of Nevada, and the Cambridge Masonic Lodge.

Melvin is survived by a brother, Tom Tomlinson of Sioux City, Iowa; a sister, Ruth Knaack of Phoenix, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Rex (Judy) Hoel of Nevada, Iowa; and four sisters-in-law, Patty Olson of Webster City, Iowa, Donna Sandmeier of McCallsburg, Iowa, Naomi Tomlinson of Huxley, Iowa, and Dorothy Tomlinson of Spanish Fork, Utah.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and three brothers, Paul, Leslie and Rex.
