CIVIL WAR UNION SOLDIER

John Elstan, son of James and Lydia (Linton) Elston, was born in Darke County, Ohio, Feb 5, 1842. He enrolled in the Union Army Feb 29, 1864 at Lima, Ohio, in the A Company, 57th Regiment, Infantry, as a private. He was in action Jun 27, 1864, at Little Kenesaw, Georgia, and Jul 22, 1864, at Atlanta, Georgia. He was wounded near Atlanta, Georgia, on Aug 31, 1864, and his arm was amputated. He was discharged Apr 17, 1865. He married Mary Emeline McKissick on Jun 29, 1866 near Genoa, Indiana by the 'J P' Emanuel Conkle. In 1866 he resided at Royal Oak, Van Wert County, Ohio. In 1883 he resided at Timbersville, Paulding County, Ohio. In 1890 he resided at Washington Township, Paulding County, Ohio. In 1894 he resided at Mandale, Paulding County, Ohio. Then he had lost the use of his other arm. In 1898 he had only one living child (James Wesley Elstan). John died in Mandale, Ohio, on May 24, 1908, and Mary Emeline McKissick died on Jun 11, 1912.
