CHARLES FOSTER DIED IN THE PEN

He is the First One Convicted of the Johnson Murder To Succumb

Owing to Confinement He Had Been Ill For Some Time - The Remains Will be Brought Here For Interment - He Was Sixty-five Years of Age.

Charles A. foster died in the penitentiary Saturday aged about sixty-five years. It is understood that death was due to worry over his confinement. Mr. Foster moved from Cleveland to this city early in the eighties. During the administration of Thomas Meehan, he served on the police force. His principal occupation was selling books, rugs etc.

Two years ago he was arrested on the charge of being implicated in robbing R. B. Hale's smoke house in Washington township. He was tried, convicted and sent to the penitentiary. Later he was charged with being one of the murderers of W. C. Johnson, the celery king at Carey. He was taken from the pen to Upper Sandusky where he was tried, found guilty and was sentenced to serve the remainder of his life in prison. A motion was recently argued to secure a new trial.

The deceased was very well known in this city. He leaves an aged wife, one son and several brothers, all residents of this city, to mourn his death.

CHARLES FOSTER LAID TO REST

The remains of Charles Foster now sleep in Maple Grove cemetery.

Private funeral services, unusually solemn were held over the remains, this afternoon, only the immediate friends and relatives being present.

Mr. Foster became suddenly ill Saturday morning and was removed to the hospital where he was being cared for by an attendant. The attendant left the room for a few moments and upon his return his patient raised up in the cot on which he had been reclining. He toppled forward to the floor. He was picked up dead. In falling his face was slightly bruised. This bruise was the only mark that marred the features of the aged man as he lay in his coffin neatly attired in burial clothes of black.

Mr. Foster had been enjoying pretty good health for a long time prior to last Saturday and in a letter written to relatives in this last Wednesday expressed the belief that he might live to see the day that he would be cleared of the offenses charged against him.
Death was due to apoplexy.
