US Congressman. A Democrat, he was elected to the Fifty-fifth and two succeeding Congresses, representing the 3rd District of Texas. He served from 1897 until his death in office. DeGraffenreid was born in Franklin, Tennessee, and graduated from the law department of Cumberland University in Lebanon at age 20. After practicing law in Franklin and Chattanooga, he moved to Texas in 1881 and applied his legal expertise in aiding construction of the Texas & Pacific Railroad; he settled as an attorney in Longview, Texas in 1883. Prior to his stint on Capitol Hill DeGraffenreid served briefly as Gregg County Attorney and was defeated in an 1890 bid for Congress. He died suddenly from a stroke at 43 in Washington DC. Gordon James Russell was elected to complete his third term.
