William Clyde "Bill" Canterbury, 85, of Howard died April 4, 2014, in Howard.
He was born Nov. 20, 1928, in Cañon City to Edith Irene (Chess) and William E. Canterbury.
He grew up in Garden Park and Beaver Creek in a ranching family, attending Garden Park and Beaver Creek schools through the eighth grade.
In 1980, he completed his GED while working for the Fremont County Sheriff's Department, where he worked as a deputy for 13 years.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in February 1951, and served in the Korean War. He was trained as a medic but was placed in a rifle company.
While in Korea, he was assigned to Battery B of the 932nd regiment of the 31st Dixie Division as a rifleman, and then in the 40th Division as a scout.
He carried a Browning automatic rifle and then was transferred to an artillery unit, where he served on a gun crew on the 105 howitzer.
His tour of duty ended in 1952, and he served in the reserves until 1956, when he was honorably discharged.
He received the following medals: Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal with One Battle Star, United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, The Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Badge and the Marksman Shooting Medal.
Mr. Canterbury married Gloria Jean Pavey on Nov. 22, 1952, in Simla and then moved to Howard, where he continued ranching throughout his life.
He drove a school bus for 43 years for the Salida School District R-32-J.
He was a life member of the Fremont Cattlemen's Association and served as president. He belonged to the Colorado Cattlemen's Association and National Cattlemen's Association and served on the Colorado Cattlemen's Association Brand and Theft Committee.
Mr. Canterbury was a hunter education instructor for 45 years and was a member of the National Rifle Association, Soil Conservation District, a life member of the American Legion and a supporter of the Paralyzed Veterans Association.
He was a member of the Howard Community Church and served on the board of elders. He supported the Sudan Interior Missions for over 40 years.
Friends and family said that of all his accomplishments, he valued most his love for his family and his faith in Christ, whom he accepted as his Savior in September 1954.

A celebration of his life will be at 9:30 a.m. April 11, 2014, at Cañon Community Baptist Church, North 11th and Monroe in Cañon City.
Interment will follow at Garden Park Cemetery with a reception following at the church.
