THOMAS HUNT was born on December 17, 1787, in or near Bryan's Station in Fayette County, Kentucky, the second child and first son of Levi and Rachel (Dean) Hunt. Levi and Rachel Hunt were married on December 11, 1784, in Surry County, North Carolina, but had moved to Fayette County, Kentucky, by August 1787 when Levi Hunt and his brother John are listed on the county tax list and are members of the Marble Creek Baptist Church. Bryant's Station was an early fortified settlement about five miles northeast of present day Lexington, Kentucky. In November 1799, after more than twelve years as members of the Bryan Station Baptist church, "Bro. Levy Hunt & his wife" were given letters of dismissal as they then moved from Fayette County, Kentucky to Clermont County, Ohio before or in 1800.

On January 2, 1812, 24-year-old Thomas Hunt married 20-year-old ELIZABETH BREDWELL, the oldest daughter of Revolutionary War veteran Yelveton Bredwell and his wife Catherine Collins. Elizabeth's parents were both born in Virginia but married in Bourbon County, Kentucky on March 10, 1791. Nine months later, on December 18, 1791, their daughter Elizabeth was born in Fayette County, Kentucky. In 1806 the Bredwell family moved from Kentucky to Tate township in Clermont County, Ohio, and settled along the old Augusta Road, more than one mile from the town of Bethel. Unfortunately, Elizabeth's father, Yelveton Bredwell, died within two years of her marriage to Thomas Hunt, while her mother, Catherine, will live another 35 years, dying in 1849.

In the 1820 U.S. census, Thomas Hunt, wife Elizabeth and four children under age ten are in Tate township in Clermont County, Ohio. The Thomas Hunt family has two boys (George and John) and two girls (Sarah and Catharine).Thomas and Elizabeth will have six more children, Levi, Rachel Dean, Andrew Jackson, Agnes, Elizabeth and Napoleon Bonaparte for a total of ten Hunt children.

Thomas Hunt was a gunsmith and it is believed he learned the gunsmith trade from an older cousin, John Hunt (1777-1850) who then lived in Pike township in Brown County, Ohio. In 1830 Thomas Hunt was operating a gunsmith ship in Bethel in Clermont County, and apprenticed John Park, who was later to become a well-known Ohio gun maker himself.

In 1832 Thomas and Elizabeth Hunt moved the family to the southwestern part of Peoria County, Illinois and settled in Timber township. Hunt continued his trade and good reputation as a gunsmith. His rifles still in existence are cherished by collectors.

Thomas Hunt died on September 17, 1836 at the age of 48. His probate file is among the earliest on record in the Peoria County courthouse amd contains a complete list of gunsmith tools. Most of these tools were purchased by his son, George W. Hunt, who later had a gunsmith shop in Trivoli in Peoria County. Elizabeth (Bredwell) Hunt, Thomas' wife, lived another twelve years before dying in Peoria County, Illinois, on January 31, 1849 at the age of 57.
