Edwin joined the confederate Army March 1862 when he was 18.
He was assigned to Co.1 24th Texas Regiment of Hood's Brigade. He served in the medical Corps all during the war he saw lots of action in many of the battles.
Edwin was captured at Post Arkansas and taken to prison in Illinois where he was able to escape beacuse of his small size. On an exchange of prisoners which did not include him, he grasped the leg of a large man who limped through the dark hall and by the counter unnoticed and with Edwin uncounted. They rejoined the Confederate Army and were in Tennesse when the war ended.
Edwin stayed with a family there for more than a year before starting back to Texas on a mule that was soon unable to go further. The war had been over for two years and his parents thought him dead but were overjoyed when he walked into Hope, Texas in a famished condition in 1867.
