Samuel was the fourth child of David Woodmansee and Penelope Warden. Samuel, three of his brothers and cousins
served in th Monmouth County Militia during the revolutionary war. Samuel was listed in Caption John Stout's Company on 2 April 1776.
He married Aulice Jeffery in 1776.
Samuel and Aulice owned land in Monmouth Co. where they raised their family. In 1809 Samuel and two of his son-in-laws, Paul Potter and Caleb Falkenburg, as trustees of the Methodist Church, bought land for the Good Luck Church at
Lanoka Harbor. A number of Woodmansee's are buried in this church yard cemetery and some of the old limestone headstones can still be seen.
Samuel and Aulice are not buried there as they joined the westward migration to Ohio and left in 1818.
All of Samuel and Aulice children except three married daughters, Lydie, Penelope and Hannah, preceded/followed their parents to Ohio. If they floated down the Ohio or went by covered wagon is not known.
They settled in Highland county, Ohio an area that was part of Virginia Military District. This was land set aside for Virginia officers and soldiers in lieu of cash payment for military service. Some sold their land rather than setteling on it. One of them, Lieutenant Joseph Conway received a large portion, had it surveyed, and after his death it was sold by his heirs. Samuel's land was part of this Joseph Conway survey.
