He was a soldier in Company C, 6th Tennessee Infantry, USA.

Obituary from The Journal and Tribune, Knoxville, Tenn., Wednesday Morning, March 22, 1913:
"Rudder - A. A. Rudder, aged seventy-eight years, a veteran of the civil war, died suddenly Tuesday morning at three o'clock at his home at Mt. Olive of heart failure.
The funeral services will be conducted from the Mt. Olive church this morning at then o'clock by Rev. W. R. Dawson, assisted by Rev. Mr. Shaffer. Interment will follow in a nearby cemetery. The deceased is survived by seven children. The children are Mesdames Lydia Wilson, of Greenback; M J Rudder, of Etowah, and Martha and Nora Moore, of Vestal, and Messrs. James E., A. A., Jr., and C. R. Rudder.
Mr. Rudder served in Company C, Sixth Tennessee infantry, union army. He was a member of James Franklin post, G. A. R., also of the Masonic order, and the services at the grave will be under their auspices. He was also a member of the English Lutheran church. The pallbearers will be selected from Masons and G. A. R. members."
