Harold was the eldest of four children born to:
John Frederick Bickel, b. Sep. 8, 1859 in Caledonia, Racine County, WI. and d. Nov. 28, 1941 in Centralia, Lewis County, WA. &
Cora Brown Marcher, b. Aug. 5, 1864 in IL. and d. Apr. 28, 1930 in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles County, CA.

John and Cora's children were:
1) Harold Leroy Bickel, b. Apr. 11, 1887 in Racine, Racine County, WI. and d. Oct. 25, 1953 in Pasadena, Los Angeles County, CA.
2) Rosina Elizabeth 'Bessie' Bickel, b. Apr. 2, 1889 in Racine, WI. and d. Mar. 15, 1978 in Laguna Beach, Orange Co., Ca. She marr. George Ripley.
3) John Marcher 'Jack' Bickel, b. Feb. 21, 1892 in Racine, WI. and d. Nov. 1973 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He graduated from Racine High School (WI.) in 1909.
4) Ernest Frederick McIntyre Bickel, (better known as stage and screen actor, Fredric March), b. Aug. 31, 1897 in Racine, Racine, WI. and d. Apr. 14, 1975 of kidney failure at 10:30 AM at Mt. Sinai hospital (renamed Cedars Sinai hospital) in the Beverly Grove neighborhood of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA. with his wife, Florence, by his side.
In 1920, he began work as an extra in films and in 1924, changed his last name to March, a shortened form of his mother's maiden name, Marcher.
In 1924, Fredric married Ellis Baker, an actress. They divorced in 1926.
On May 30, 1927, he married Florence Eldridge MacKechnie and they had two adopted children. They remained married until his death in 1975. He is buried in the March Estate Cemetery, New Milford, Litchfield County, CT.
