James Konkler, age 87 of Lindstrom, passed away on April 3, 2011. He was born on March 30, 1924, in Yankton, South Dakota, the eldest of eight children.

He graduated from Harding High School in St. Paul and served in the United States Navy from 1942-1946 where, amongst other duties, he served on aircraft carriers and taught swimming lessons. He also served in the National Guard where he was nicknamed "Sergeant Beno" as in "There will ‘be no' leave until all the work is finished".

He retired after 39 years with Northern States Power Company, working his way from lineman to Supervisor in the Electric Trouble Department. Subsequently, he served as a Bailiff for 18 years with the Chisago County Sheriff's Department.

He married Wilma Joyce Ackerley on December 26, 1944 and together they raised four children in the Mahtomedi and then Chisago City area. After 38 years of marriage, Wilma preceded him in death in 1982.

In 1984, he married Janice Mae Cunnien and enjoyed an additional 26 years of married life. In addition to his first wife, Wilma, Jim was also preceded in death by a son, James Jr. and siblings; Ken, Mary, and Roberta.

He is survived by his second wife Janice; children Rick (Pat), Amy (Dan) Shaleen, & Beth (Mark) Ulman; 13 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; step-children Tom Ackerley, Wanda (Dennis) Peterson, & Dennis (Karie) Ackerley; sister Phyllis; brothers Walter, Bruce, & Lowell along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jim thoroughly enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, skiing, canoeing, and learning about history. He was also an avid reader. He participated in the yearly family cribbage tournament and was grand champion in 2010. He was a collector of all things because, "a guy's gotta have stuff"! In his later years, he was very active with The Masons including Commandry, Scottish Rite, Royal Arch, Shriners, and served as a district representative for Grand Lodge. Jim eventually attained a 33rd Degree and was very proud of this accomplishment.

Memorial Service 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2011 with time of gathering following from 4-7 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Masonic Service at the Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstrom, MN
