PVT US ARMY - WORLD WAR I

UNITY - Merle W. Gordon, 94, a resident of 37 years in Unity, died Friday, May 10, 1991, at a local nurs¬ing home, after a long illness. He was born April 14, 1897, in Lowell, the son of Robert and Augusta (Sibley) Gordon. He graduated from Orono High School in 1917 and Shows Business College in Portland in 1921.


He was an Army veteran of World War I, serving in Texas and New York City.


He was employed by several paper mills and construction companies as a bookkeeper. He was also a tax collector and selectman in Burlington and Lowell at one time. He owned and operated the Unity Movie Theatre.


Mr. Gordon was a 60-year member of the Horab Masonic Lodge No. 93 in Lincoln and a 50-year member of Esentarsis Grange of Lowell and was also, a member of the Benjamin Berry Post American Legion of Unity.


He was predeceased by his wife, Tina (Hodgkins) Gordon, on Jan. 1, 1988.


Surviving are two sisters, Mabel E. Dunn and Marjorie Chandler, both of Jacksonville, Fla.
