Joan Marcia Geraldine Haggard was born in Guatemala City in 1914, the daughter of British diplomat Sir Godfrey Digby Napier Haggard and his French Canadian/American wife Georgianna Marie Ruel Haggard. Her father was knighted for his service to England. Her siblings included actor/writer/British agent Stephen Hubert Avenel Haggard, as well as Virginia Haggard, who authored "My Life with Chagall," which described her seven year romance with the artist Marc Chagall. Joan was raised in a variety of countries. She married diplomat Gerard Thomas Corley Smith about 1937 in Italy. Corley and Joan had four children, three daughters and a son, also born in a variety of countries. Joan and her husband eventually resided at Greensted Hall in Ongar, Epping Forest, Essex, England. She died there in Feb 1984. While I'm confident that Joan is buried in England, I do not as yet know the name of the cemetery.

Sources include the England & Wales Death Index, passenger lists, and my family copy of the 1942 Généalogie de la Famille Goulet-Ruel.
