Newton Pingrey Branch, son of Jasper Levi and Rebecca Branch and grandson of Josiah and Polly (Pingrey) Branch, was the first postmaster at Jeffersonville, which was named by Newton's father, Jasper Branch.

Newton married Maria "Louisa" Cornell 23 Sep 1845 in Meigs County Ohio, and they had eight children; Charles J., Florence C, Sarah E.(died as child), Elma J, John Elrie, Newton P(died age 7), William Alpheus, and Otto L.
