Engaged in mercantile business for short time; in 1855 acquired land and went into farming near Chestnut Mound, then in Putnam County but later in Smith; earlier had lived in Jackson County. Justice of the peace in Jackson County and in 1852 elected sheriff of that county, making home in Gainesboro
