SENATE, 46th General Assembly, 1889-91; representing Smith & Wilson counties; Democrat; had been a Whig before Civil War. Born in Smith County in 1825; son of David and Mary (Thackston) Apple. Attended "common schools" Married in 1848 to Mary J. Halford, daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Apple) Halford; children- - John H. and Tennie. Engaged in mercantile business for short time; in 1855 acquired land and went into farming near Chestnut Mound, then in Putnam County but later in Smith; earlier had lived in Jackson County. Justice of the peace in Jackson County and in 1852 elected sheriff of that county, making home in Gainesboro
