William Hemphill Bell Jr. was a United States Soldier who served in the Philippine Insurrection, the Punitive Expedition, and the First World War.
He was born on October 3rd, 1874, in Washington State, the son of U.S. Army Brigadier General William H. Bell (Sr.) and Mary Rebecca Edgar.
He enlisted as a Private in Troop A of the 4th United States Cavalry Regiment on November 29th, 1899, and was promoted to Corporal, and then Sergeant, before he was honorably discharged to accept a commission as an officer on July 6th, 1901. He was appointed as a Second Lieutenant of Cavalry with the 1st United States Cavalry Regiment on February 2nd, 1901, and accepted the appointment on July 7th, 1901, and would serve for the next nineteen years in the army. He was promoted to First Lieutenant of Cavalry with the 11th Cavalry Regiment on August 22nd, 1909, before being unassigned on March 21st, 1913, however he was assigned to the 12th Cavalry Regiment on May 12th, 1915, and was promoted to Captain of Cavalry on July 1st, 1916.
With the involvement of the U.S. in the First World War the need arose for additional units to be raised from the various National Guard and Drafts, these new units required officers who had experience, and as such Captain Bell was appointed as a Major of Infantry in the National Army on August 5th, 1917, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army on July 30th, 1918, and served during the war before being honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army on May 7th, 1920.
He returned to the rank of Captain in the regular army, and was retired from active service as a Major of Cavalry on July 1st, 1920, due to disability incurred in the line of duty, and was later promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on the retired list on December 5th, 1921.
Colonel Bell died on July 27th, 1923, at San Diego, California, and was buried with full military honors at the National Cemetery in San Francisco, California.
