She was born March 20, 1921 in Oakboro in Stanly County, NC, to the late Adam Alec and Veta Mae Foreman Howard. Following graduation from Oakboro High School in 1938, Mrs. Crayton graduated from Appalachian State University in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. After graduation she taught in Stanfield and Endy, NC.

On July 15, 1944, Mrs. Crayton married her high school sweetheart, Bill Crayton, and moved to Washington, DC. Upon her later return to North Carolina, she taught in Albemarle, until in 1947, when she began her teaching career in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, first at Derita School, then at Chantilly Elementary School.

Mrs. Crayton was one of the first Gifted Program (SAT) teachers in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg System, teaching these students at Myers Park Elementary School. She retired in 1976, following a 33-year career in education.
