John E. "Jack" Corbitt, 85, Normal, died at 6:40 p.m. Monday (March 28, 2011) at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.

He was born April 16, 1925 in Covell to Edward and Mary C. Connolly Corbitt. He married Marian Thoennes on Aug. 8, 1946, in Bloomington. She died Aug. 17, 1970. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Thomas and Craig, and one grandson. He later married Mary A. Scharf on Sept. 17, 1971. She survives.

He is also survived by two sons, Steven (Diane) Corbitt, Charlotte, N.C. and Michael (Roz) Corbitt, Bloomington; seven daughters, Jayne Hampton, Bloomington; Barbara (Thomas) Anderson, Normal; Jill Corbitt and Colleen (Tim) Payne, both of Bloomington; Kathy (Brian) Hongsermeier, Summerville, S.C. and Carol Corbitt and Patricia (Brian) Kelley, both of Normal; daughters-in-law, Cheryl Corbitt, Heyworth and Debbie Corbitt, Bloomington; four stepsons, William Scharf, East Peoria; Joseph (Carri) Scharf, Bloomington and James (Mary Kay) Scharf and John Scharf, both of Normal; one sister, Mary Frances Harrison, Bakersfield, California; one brother, Richard (Johnnie) Corbitt, Prescott, Arizona; 29 grandchildre; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was in the United States Navy Reserves Midshipman's School and later was an ensign in the U.S. Navy. He was a World War II veteran and served in the European Theatre.
