Although reportedly born in Perry County, Pennsylvania, one of his military records (company descriptive list) claims Juniata County. The son of Christian & Jane (Heiser) Beason or Basom, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Greenwood Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 4" tall with brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Newport, Perry County, August 6, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 13 as a private with Co. I, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry, and promoted to corporal April 30, 1863. He was absent in the hospital at muster-out but honorably discharged to date May 21, 1863. His brother Lewis P., spelling his surname "Besom," served in the same company.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-four in Carlisle August 31, 1864, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. A, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged by general order to date May 29, 1865.

He married Elizabeth Oren and fathered the children you see linked below. Cause of his death is listed as "mitral stenosis" with "rheumatism" a contributing factor.
