George W. Holt was 27, and living in Mt. Pleasant, Henry Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. K of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Oct 5, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 25, 1861. He was promoted to Quartermaster-Sergeant the next day on Nov 26, 1861. On June 9, 1862, he was promoted as Commissary Sergeant.

Holt was later mustered out of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Jan 23, 1863, under General Order 126, War Dept., Adjutant-General's Office, disbanding the battalion cavalry staff.

Holt then reenlisted in Co. K of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Jan 1, 1864. He was wounded in action on June 7, 1864, at Ripley, MS, and taken prisoner. He was sent to Confederate prisons at Cahaba and Castle Morgan in Alabama. He later escaped from prison at Meridian, MS, but was recaptured. Eventually Holt was sent home on furlough as a POW.

Holt was discharged from the service at Clinton, Iowa, on June 7, 1865, as a paroled prisoner of war under telegraphic order of the War Dept dated May 13, 1865.

Holt applied for his pension on July 5, 1889. His application is #715,473, and his certificate #781,938.
