He was the son of Samuel Fielder and Sarah Seaman, and he was born in Long Island, New York. His family moved to the Macon area of Lenawee County, Michigan by 1870.

Mary Ann Frazer, his soon-to-be wife, emigrated from County Antrim, Ireland with her sister, Elizabeth, to the Tecumseh area, and shortly thereafter she met and married William Fielder. They were married August 26, 1886 in the Methodist Episcopal Church in Tecumseh, Lenawee County, Michigan.

William and Mary Ann had four children: Saran Arnetta "Nettie," Nora Ellen, Glen Frazer, Helen Elizabeth, and Samuel Bertrum "Bert."

His wife, Mary A., age 56, born in Ireland, both parents born in Ireland, is also listed along with Nellie E, their daughter, who was 24 years of age and single, was a dressmaker by trade; and also Bertram, 18 years old, born in Michigan and his occupation was farm laborer. Their neighbors were Godfrey C. and Emma C. Jedele, and Emmet J. and Pearl R. Brighton.

William had diabetes, and he suffered strokes with paralysis as a result. It was stroke complications that ended his life.
