His parents, John and Maria Magdalena Kohl Minard were born in Maryland. Samuel had siblings: George, John, Elizabeth, Sophia, Solomon, Jacob, Joseph, Burket, Henry, and Daniel. His father's 1867 obituary stated: "Mr. John Minor, one of the oldest men in Harrison county, died last week at his residence one mile south of New Market, in the 101st year of his age. He was born in Frederick, Maryland. He had lived on the same farm, near New Market, for over 49 years, was a consistent member of the Lutheran church for 75 years, and died in the full possession of his faculties." Samuel farmed in Washington Township. He died from heart disease at the age of 85 years 10months and12 days.
