James Thomason was born in Union County, Georgia, in the now-defunct town of Gaddistown.
He served as s private for the CSA in Company G of the 13th Georgia Cavalry, originally the 16th Battalion Georgia Cavalry, under Lt. Col. Francis M. Nix and Captain F. J. Whitehead.
In 1869, he moved his wife and young family to East Tenneessee, to what is now Hamblen County. The last 6 of his 10 children were born in Tennessee.
James died at the age of 53.
