Samuel Jervey DuPre, Jr., 100, of Mount Pleasant, SC, passed away November 3, 2012.

Mr. DuPre was born February 25, 1912 in Glendale, SC, son of the late Samuel Jervey DuPre, Sr. and Hallie Mathews DuPre.

He was a graduate of The Citadel, class of 1935 where he played football and basketball and was captain of the track team. Mr. DuPre received a master's degree from Columbia University, before becoming principal of Pine Street Elementary School in Spartanburg in 1937, where he remained until retirement in 1975.

Many innovative educational initiatives were begun in his tenure, but he felt most blessed to have been part of the lives of so many young people throughout the years. Samuel never failed to credit those with whom he worked for their extraordinary efforts and achievements.

In 1928 he became the first camper at Camp Pinnacle for Boys in Hendersonville, NC and was instrumental in its founding. He remained with the camp in varying capacities for 37 summers. He was also a member of the South Carolina Football Association and refereed high school football games for a quarter of a century. As a member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent, he served as a member of the Vestry, taught Sunday school and was a scout master.

During retirement he hiked the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain, GA to Mt. Katahdin, ME and traveled to six continents and all 50 states.

Mr. DuPre was predeceased by his wife of 60 years Blanche Kinsey Evans DuPre, sisters Eloise Mathews DuPre Royall of Mt. Pleasant and Emily Hughes DuPre Beattie of Greenville, and brother John Young DuPre of Spartanburg. He is survived by his daughter; two sons; sister; brother; three grandchildren, and a great-grandson.

While mourning their loss, it is with joy and gratitude that his loved ones celebrate his life.

The relatives and friends of Jervey DuPre are invited to attend his memorial service, November 7, 2012, at the Church of the Advent, Spartanburg, SC, at 3:00 pm. Interment will be, November 8, 2012, at 2:00 pm in Old Saint David's Churchyard, Cheraw, SC.
