SPARTA -- Harley Lee Throgmorton, 87, passed away at 6:50 a.m. Friday, March 25, 2011, in St. Louis University Hospital. He died from injuries sustained in a car accident Wednesday evening.

Harley was born May 27, 1923, in Williamson County. He was the son of John and Fleeta (Goodman) Throgmorton.

He was united in marriage to Myra June Webb on July 14, 1946. They raised four children together in Sparta: a daughter, Janet Ramsey; son, Barry Throgmorton; daughter, Jill Grammer; and daughter, Brenda Coop. Myra preceded him in death April 13, 2003.

Harley was remarried to Vivian Erlita Bisdorf July 15, 2006. She resides in Sparta.

Survivors include four children, Janet Ramsey of Merced, Calif., Barry Throgmorton of Monterey, Calif., Jill Grammer (Gary) of Longmount, Colo., and Brenda Coop (Mark) of Sparta; three stepchildren, Keith Lane (Margaret) of Elizabethtown, Ky., Gaelane Rosinski (Christopher) of Johnson City, Tenn., and Dorothy Haemer (Bob) of Moline; one brother and sister, Ruben Throgmorton and Margie Trovillion, both of Goreville; eight grandchildren; 14 stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren with another due in September; 12 stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Myra, Harley was preceded in death by three brothers, William Pink Throgmorton, Herman Throgmorton and Carl Throgmorton; and four sisters, Mary Pritchett, Belle Lingle, Ella Becker and Lillian Layman.

Harley served in the U.S. Coast Guard for three years as a seaman first class. He was a retired employee of GTE/Verizon. He and Myra owned and operated Throgmorton Bait and Tackle for 30 years. Patrons came for the fish stories as much as the worms, minnows and crickets.

His loves included gardening, fishing, hunting and serving the Lord. He was an elder in Community of Christ Church in Sparta, where he served many years as pastor. He also was a member of Randolph County Rod and Gun Club.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2011, in Community of Christ Church in Tunnel Hill. Graveside services will immediately follow in Webb Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at McDaniel Funeral Home in Sparta and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be made to Sparta Community of Christ Church, the Myra June Webb Throgmorton Memorial Scholarship at SIUC or the donor's choice.
