IRWIN Jimmie Sue (Akers), of Winston-Salem, NC, died Friday, March 25, 2011 of natural causes. She was 92 years old and had been ill for some time. Mrs. Irwin was the beloved wife of Howard "Slim" Irwin, who preceded her in death in 2005. Mrs. Irwin was born in Dawson, Texas in 1918, graduated from Baylor University in 1938, and received an M Ed. from William Paterson College in New Jersey in 1980. During WWII, she worked with the USAF Intelligence Office at Air Service Command in Dayton, Ohio. Mrs. Irwin also had an extensive career as an educator, teaching at both the high school and university levels in Texas, Florida, New York and New Jersey. She and her husband were married in 1947 in Dawson, but spent most of their married life living in Montvale, New Jersey, where they raised their children, Charles, of Oklahoma City, and Mary, of Winston-Salem, NC. The Irwins relocated to North Carolina in 2003 to be near their daughter. In addition to her children, Mrs. Irwin is survived by two grandsons, Edward, of Seattle, WA, and Alexander, of Lille, France. A memorial service will be held at 4:30 PM Tuesday, March 29, 2011 in the Reich Chapel of First Baptist Church by Dr. David Hughes. The family will receive friends after the service in the Brown Room of the church. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
