Sidney Guy Abernathy was born in 1882, the fourth child of Benjamin Smith and Jane Abernathy of Weakley County, Tennessee. Some sources list his mother as Sarah Louise Swindell. This may have been her name and Jane could have been a nickname. Guy became a County Agent in Blount County, Tennessee, until he moved to Columbia where he became editor of The Tennessee Farm Bureau newspaper. He later was key in initiating the practice of farmers buying and selling products as a cooperative group, thus beginning the Co-Op system that has become popular in the Southeast. In Columbia, he met Esther Jackson, whom he married in 1924. They were blessed with the birth of three children: Evelyn Abernathy Campbell, Sidney Guy Abernathy Jr., and William Jackson Abernathy. In 1930 the family is listed as living on Jackson Highway in District 9 of Maury County, Tennessee. They have two children in the household with them - Evelyn age 5 years, 8 months and Sidney Jr., age 1 year, 3 months. Guy died in 1942 and was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Columbia, Tennessee.
