Ransom D. Smith was born to Gulielmus Smith, in Hanover Co, VA. He moved with his family to Granville Co, NC abt 1762-1763, where he married Elizabeth Moss. He then moved his family to Claiborne Co, TN, abt 1805. Four years later (1809), either thru country lines or household move, he was found in Campbell Co, TN and was there for the next 22 yrs, leaving abt 1831, to Marion Co, TN. Again thru Country lines, his land was in Marion County but later was found in Sequatchie County, where he remained until death. His grave, along with his wife, Elizabeth, was lost in a flood in the Sequatchie area. There is a monument in Teague Cemetery in memory of him, erected by his Great Grandchildren and E.W.S. He was 94y 4m and 1d, when he died.

Ransom was a Private in the NC Militia in the Revolutionary War. He served as follows: 3 months under Capt. Howell Lewis, 3 months with Barlett Seabry, and Col. Saunders, 3 months under Capt. Joseph Blackwell, Henderson, and Col. Malbury A. Frenchman, and 3 months under Capt. Joseph Blackwell and Col. Joseph Taylor.
