Bessie was the eldest child and daughter of Dr. Aaron Luse Gibbs and Jessie Mina Brands (1862-1932). Aaron and Jessie had one other child, a daughter who was born after Bessie - Sadie M. Gibbs (1884-1922), who married Everett J. Paddock. After the death of Aaron Luse in 1888, Jessie Brands Gibbs married Amos D. Hildebrant.
