Andrew J. Thompson, the Decatur contractor, died at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at his home, 928 North Main street, aged 69 years.
Death was the result of a stroke of paralysis which Mr. Thompson suffered Monday while working on the roof of a house on East Marietta street. He was found on the roof in an unconscious condition by some of the workmen at the house and taken to his home in an ambulance.
In the past three years, Mr. Thompson has had four strokes of paralysis. During the last four years, he has not worked any and was working on the roof Monday simply as a matter of accommodation to the owner of the house who could not find enough workmen.
Andrew Jackson Thomson was born in Erie county, N.Y. in 1834. At the age of 10 years, he came to Illinois with his parents. The family settled at Lawrence, McHenry county, and when 23 years old, Mr. Thompson came to Macon county and settled on a farm near Warrensburg. In 1867, he came to Decatur and has since resided here. For many years, he has been a contracting carpenter and was well known in this city.
Mr. Thompson married Elizabeth Allen in 1861. She was one of his pupils when he taught school in McHenry county.
Surviving him is his widow, one son, Allen J. Thompson of St. Louis, a daughter, Mrs. J.L. Hedrick of Chicago, a brother, James Thompson of Harvard, Ills. and a sister, Mrs. Lee Anderson of Lawrence, Ills.
The funeral will be held from the residence Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock with Rev. F.B. Jones of the Christian Temple officiating. The interment will be at Greenwood.
