He was born May 11, 1925, in East St. Louis, Ill. son of the late Elza Hurt and Opal (Snow) Hurt. He spent his adulthood in St. Louis, Mo., and in Illinois. He was saved on April 24, 1952, and was baptized in 1963. He was of the Christian faith.
Mr. Hurt was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II between 1943 and 1946 and served as a bosun's mate. third class. He was awarded a purple heart.
He worked in the iron mines at Iron Mountain and later worked as a dockhand for Roadway Express for 30 years before his retirement. He was a member of the Teamsters and the VFW. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, working with wood and stone, building, collecting, and gardening.
Mr. Hurt spent his childhood years in Iron County and attended school there.
He was married to Marlene Hurt, who preceded him in death.
Surviving are one son, Phillip Edward Hurt of Park Hills, Mo.; one stepson, Timothy Pogue of St. Louis, Mo.; six daughters, Rosemary (Danny) Koch of Silva, Mo., Bonnie (Marlin) Wetzel of Waterloo, Ill., Phyllis (Glen) Rock of DeSoto, Mo., Barbara Vogel, and Diane (Larry) Parsons of Arnold, Mo., Susan (Steve) Piechocinski; one sister, Bernice Arnheart-Sparks of Farmington, Mo.; 24 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Services were held Thursday, March 24, 2011, at Ruegg Funeral Home in Piedmont, MO. Pallbearers were Glen Rock, Steve Piechocinski, Chris Wetzel, Aaron Wetzel, Ryan Wetzel, Eric Wetzel, Jody Rock and Stevie Piechocinski. Interment was in Masonic Cemetery, Piedmont, MO.
