Confederate veteran. Son of Leonard and Talitha Hale Carden. Was attending the Georgia Military Institute when the Civil War broke out. Enlisted at Marietta, Georgia, on May 15, 1864, and fought throughout the Atlanta campaign. Returned to school after the war, and was licensed to preach on November 6, 1869. Methodist minister and Secretary of the Holston Conference for many years. Married in 1875 to Mattie Stewart.
