Mr. Akins was a member of the Statesboro Bulldog Club and a member and past president of the Statesboro Sigma Chi Alumni Association. He was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the United States Army. He was a former president of the Statesboro Jaycees and was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Anne Jones Akins of Statesboro; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Kay Kay Akins of Statesboro, and Dr. Tom and Gina Akins of Wrightsville, Ga.; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lois and Jack Newsome of Washington, Ga. and five grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Hodges-Moore Funeral Home. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery. Hodges-Moore Funeral Home, Statesboro
