'Robert Campbell was born in Ulster, Ireland about 1673. In 1714, came with his family from County Tyrone. Province of Ulster, Ireland. His youngest son, Robert Campbell, writes "When I was five, my father and mother brought me with their family to Boston, New England, thence to New London, there lived 8 years. From thence we came to Voluntown, May, 1722."
Robert Campbell was among the earliest settlers of Voluntown , Connecticut, close to the Rhode Island Line. His six children were all born in Ireland, the first being married before coming to America. Robert Campbell's first wife was Janet, of whom the first five children were born; the last, Robert, was son of the second wife, who died April 19, 1747, aged 76.' (footnote 1) There has been discussions on whether or not there was a second wife, with sources on both sides of the issue. Janet has been listed in all sources as the name of Robert's wife, with no name in any source listed for his second. Robert and his wife "Jonet" had communion on 17 May 1719, but whether this is Janet the first wife, or a different person is unknown. Also unknown is the birthplace of Robert, again with two major credible sources stating one in Ireland and the other Scotland.

Children of Robert are:
Charles 1696-1770
John 1698-1775
Sarah 1700-1729
Mary 1702-1750
James 1704-1773
Robert 1709-1789

Recent research into the "Voluntown Campbells" have sourced the Y-Chromosome major Haplogroup to be R1a, which is of Norwegian in origin. This differs from the major Campbell group, which the Duke of Argyle is associated, which is R1b. The R1b is Saxon in origin. This differentiation is recognized by the "Clan Campbell of North America" as two distinct subgroups of the Campbell line. Research is ongoing and can be seen at the Clan Campbell Y-DNA research page of "Family Tree DNA"
