He was born September 5, 1925 in Orrtanna, the son of the late Curtis E. and Alice Deardorff Herring. His wife, Mary Gerhold Herring, died in 2009.
Mr. Herring was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.
For a time he worked at Knouse Foods in Orrtanna, but for most of his career he was employed at C. E. Williams Inc. in Gettysburg as an equipment operator.
Following his retirement from Williams, Mr. Herring worked part-time in the maintenance department of the Gettysburg National Military Cemetery.
Ira was a life-time member of the Cashtown Fire Company. He was a member of the Fairfield AmVets, Albert J. Lentz Post #202 American Legion in Gettysburg, Post #15 Gettysburg VFW. He was also a member of the Gettysburg Eagles and Gettysburg Moose.
Mr. Herring is survived by a brother, Glenn Herring and wife Jean of Cashtown; a nephew; several nieces and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Melvin Herring, Chester Herring, and Jay Herring.
Interment: Flohrs Cemetery.
