James Carroll Bumpass was the oldest child of Robert Davie Bumpass & Nancy Marietta Davie. Early in life, he lost all the fingers on one hand in a saw mill accident. He was educated at Wake Forest College, where he studied for the ministry as a Missionary Baptist. He was a typical Bumpass, of large stature, with a very prominent forehead and a strong voice.

3/18/1857 - Married in Granville Co., NC.

4/2/1858 - Birth of Gustavius Adolphus in Person Co., NC.

He, Emily & Gus left North Carolina sometime after 1858 and went to Arkansas as a Missionary.

Before the Civil War he moved his family to Farmersville, TX, because of Emily's health. They had an additional three children born in Texas.

James' favorite mode of travel to his church appointments was on a small pacing mule.

James' name is recorded as officiating minister on many Collin County marriage licenses.
