Gertrude Bartlett Polley
(Sept. 16, 1868-March 14, 1893)

Gertrude Bartlett Polley, youngest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Luther Bartlett of Norwood, N.Y., departed this life from her late residence, March 14th, 1893, aged 24 years. The subject of this notice was born in this village September 16th, 1868. She has spent her entire life here with the exception of a few months residence in Burlington, Vt., where she taught school with her sister. She attended the Union Free School all of her school life, except about a year in State Normal of Potsdam, N.Y. In life's fair morning she gave her heart to the precious Saviour, and her hand in Christian fellowship with the Congregational Church of which she continued an accepted member until her transfer by death. Gertrude was a loving character, and beloved by all that knew her, possessing a genial, kind nature. She endeared herself to all with whom she became acquainted. In the midst of her educational pursuit, her precious mother was smitten with paralysis, rendering her helpless and upon the daughter devolved the principal care in her prolonged suffering. For nearly three years she devoted herself to her mother's care and comfort, and no daughter could have done more, anticipating her every wish. She met it's demand to the full extent of her ability, smoothing the rough path of her mother's deep affliction, with kind, loving and gentle look and word, until her dear days exchanged suffering for health and rest in Heaven. She was married to Bert M. Polley, Oct. 23rd, 1890, with whom she lived in blessed wedlock until the death angel severed the golden link. Of this union a child was born a few weeks since, and this dear child is the connecting link of sacred truth of the life that had departed. Mrs. Polley was very happy in her home, and indeed the dark shadow fills the scene with gloom which we may not know now the why of these afflictions, because "We only know in part," but there in the higher unfolding we shall know as we are known. "Now darkly, then face to face." A large audience convened in the home Thursday, March 16, at 2 p.m., to extend sympathy and condolence to her afflicted husband and kindred. The writer, assisted by Rev. Mr. Earle of the Episcopal Church of this village, conducted the services. A deep sorrow rested on all, as was evidenced in the tearful eyes as they took the farewell look of schoolmate and friend. She rested in a beautiful which casket covered with cut flowers in various designs. Thus our community is saddened by this shift of death, another beautiful young life gone out of ___ earthly home ... (the last few lines are missing)
