Jesse was the fifth child of James Robson and his wife Martha Robison Robson.

Jesse's parents were both born in North Carolina and built a log cabin homeplace on Buffalo Creek in Washington County, Georgia. Jesse's father, James, is thought to have been born in 1800 and died in 1869 and was survived by his wife. The children of James and Martha Robson include:
1. Lucius, who moved to Texas before the Civil War
2. Albernale "Albie" who married a Dudley and moved to Texas
3. William G, who was a lawyer in Sandersville before the Civil War in the firm of Robson & Wells. He was a Lieutenant in the Howell Artillery
4. "Hans" was also a lawyer and served as a Lieutenant in Rudisills Artillery
5. Jesse A, who served in the same company as his brother Hans during the Civil War
6. Lizzie, who married Jackson "Andack" Trawick and lived in Linton, Georgia

Jesse served in the Confederate Army and was only 20 years old when the war ended in 1865, having lost a leg. In the 1870 census he was shown as single, 25 years old and studying law while living with his mother in Sandersville. He later married Georgia A Shewmake and they had five children: James G (1800), Clarence D (1882), Leland Stanford (1884), Mable C (1886), and Donald R (1888).

Jesse was elected tax collector and served two terms from 1885-1888. He was made a justice of the peace in 1891.
