Funeral services will be conducted at 5 p.m. today from Trinity Episcopal Church by the Rev. John Q. Berkwith. Internment will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Heyward Lynah, Charleston; two nieces, Miss Elizabeth Lynah and Miss Charlotte Lynah, both of Charleston: four nephews, Dr. Robert Boyd, Richmond, Va.; Dr. Bernard Boyd, Chapel Hill; both Presbyterian Ministers; Thomas Boyd, Georgetown and William Boyd, Alma Michigan. Dr. Boyd was born in Charleston on March 19, 1881, the son of the late Bernard and Joana [sic] W. Sherfesee Boyd.
He was graduated from Charleston High School, the College of Charleston, Philadelphia School of Anatomy, and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in June 1903 he served an internship in Howard Hospital Philadelphia. At the same time, he was chief resident at the Philadelphia Orthopedic Hospital. Dr. Boyd began private practice in Columbia in September 1904. He served as Health Officer 1910 – 1915, VP of the SC Medical Assoc., President of the Columbia Medical Society, 1945, Orthopedist to Advisory Board, Selective Service, Orthopedist to State Board of Health, Division Crippled Children since 1923, Chairman advisory, board (technical) State Board of Health and counselor American International of Medicine.
Dr. Boyd had recently received a letter from Belgium recognizing him in the field of crippled children and informing him that he had been elected a Fellow of the International Society of Surgery. He organized the Crippled Children’s Clinic at Columbia Hospital early in 1920. Dr. Boyd was a member of the American Orthopedic Association, Southern Surgical Association, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Southeastern Surgical Association, American Association of Railway Surgeons, American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association, and the Southern Seaboard Railway and Atlantic Coast Line Surgeons Association. He had the distinction of being the only person ever to serve as President of all three associations. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was a staff member of the Columbia, Baptist and Providence Hospitals, and consultant orthopedist of Saunders Memorial Hospital at Florence. Also, he was an honorary member of the Blue Key, University of South Carolina Chapter. Member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Dr. Boyd was a member of the Kiwanis (honorary), Forest Lake Country Club, Pine Tree Hunt Club, South Carolinian Society, Kappa Sigma fraternity, executives Club and the Columbia Cotillion. Dr. Boyd was the author of many medical publications in the Journal of the S. C. Medical Association.
Dr. "Billy" as he was affectionately known to his legion of friends, was distinguished not only in his profession, but his charm as a host and raconteur endeared him to everyone who had the good fortune to know him. A group of his friends, both within and outside the medical profession, arranged for a portrait of Dr. Boyd, which was presented to Columbia Hospital and now hands in the lobby of that institution (The accompanying print a reproduction of the portrait) at ceremonies attending the unveiling of the portrait tributes were paid him which attested to the love in which he was held by people in every walk of life.
