Charles Pettigrew came from New Jersey circa 1871 and bought swamp land near his sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Atkinson (Robert). Charles had been in the U.S. only nine years, emigrating from Ireland in 1861. His fourth child, Margaret, was born on the ship that brought them to America. This daughter later married William Roland Thompson, grandfather of Waldo Thompson. Another daughter, Lutisha, was the mother of Velma Skidmore Davidson.
