John Barber lived in Apollo, PA and attended the Poke Run Church. He answered Lincoln's first call for volunteers at the start of the Civil War. According to his granddaughter, Alta Jean Barber Alcorn,

"Twelve men, neighbors, got on their horses and rode to Washington to answer that call. When grandpa left he said he would not be gone long as it would not last long. He told Tommy, his oldest sone, to take care of his mother and sisters.

Because he came in on a horse he was placed in the cavalry. He told of one battle where cavalry was to charge first - as they galloped past the foot-soldiers, he saw his son Tommy in the line of March"

John Barber was part of the 64th Pennsylvania Infantry, 4th Calvary, and participated in the Battle of Gettysburg. His name, along with those with whom he served, is on a bronze plaque on the Pennsylvania memorial at the Gettysburg Battlefield National Military Park.
