VICTIM OF A HORRIBLE CRIME.

Joe Brevelle was born in 1879, according to the U.S. armed forces draft registration card he filled out in 1918. He was the son of a Confederate veteran. At some point, Joe was in Pollock, Louisiana where he met Ollie May (Mae) Shoemaker. They were married on July 30, 1911, and the couple moved to DeRidder, Louisiana. They were blessed with a son, James Louis, in 1915.

He worked for an insurance company for a time, but by 1920 Joe worked as a drayman (delivery driver). By 1926, he was driving a taxi in DeRidder. On August 28th of that year, Brevelle picked up two young men requesting to be driven to a friend's residence in a rural area. It was a ruse. On the journey, the young men killed Joe Brevelle, robbed him of fourteen dollars, stole his car, and dumped his body in an abandoned sawmill pond in Pickering, Louisiana. The two men were convicted of the crime and were hanged nearly two years later.
