Born at Rothesay, he emigrated to Virginia and eventually bought the old plantation, Brook Hill, from his future father in law. In 1843 he married Mary Amanda Williamson. The Williamson's had owned Brook Hill since it was built in 1731. John Stewart was a tobacco merchant that invested heavily in railroads and bonds. He and his brother donated the land and the funds to have Emmanual Episcopal Church built. Stewart also enlarged and remodeled the home at Brook Hill. John and his wife raised seven daughters there.
