Jesse Sanders died May 13 at his Tuolumne home. He was 87.
Mr. Sanders lived in Tuolumne County for 50 years, and owned and operated a barber shop in Tuolumne for 30 years.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving with Gen. George S. Patton in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was also a member of Cherokee Nations Family of Distinction, and was the last U.S. Forest Service guard at the former Riverside Guard Station, now the Riverside Ranger Station swimming hole on the north fork of the Tuolumne River.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Sanders, in 1993.
He is survived by his sons, Stanley Sanders and Ronald Sanders, both of Sonora, and John Sanders, Robert Sanders, Michael Sanders and David Sanders, all of Tuolumne; 18 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon Monday at Heuton Memorial Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. the same day at Carters Cemetery in Tuolumne.
A potluck barbecue and memorial service will follow from 3 to 6 p.m. at Tuolumne Veterans Memorial Hall.
