James Allen Chambers, 93, former Van Buren county sheriff, died Tuesday afternoon at the home of his son, M.E. Chambers in Old Hickory, Tn. The remains were brought to McMinnville Wednesday to await funeral and burial. Mr. Chambers, a native of DeKalb County, served Van Buren county as its sheriff a number of years. He married Artemisia Katherina Tosh in 1872. She passed away March 22, 1904, leaving him with 12 children. In September of 1904, he married Virginia (Jennie) Gray and they had one son, Max E. Chambers. He later moved to Smithville, where he owned and operated a small farm. As he grew feeble he moved to Old Hickory to make his home with his son. He served a number of years as an elder of the Smithville Church of Christ. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Jennie Chambers, four daughters: Mrs. Nannie Sparkman and Mrs. Frank Cantrell, both of McMinnville, Mrs. Jonah Hale of Laurenburg, Mrs. Mary Hash of Albany, Tx.:Seven sons; M.E. Chambers of Old Hickory, Charles E, Chambers of this county G.B, and James A. Chambers, Jr. of Carrolton, Tx. E.P., D.E. and Elisha Chambers of Dallas, Tx. Many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was the father of the late E.F. Chambers, who served several terms as Chief of Police of McMinnville. Prayer services were held at the residence of M.E. Chambers in Old Hickory at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning with Elder Clifford of the Old Hickory Church of Christ officiating. Funeral services were held at 2:30 from the chapel of the John High Funeral Home with Elder M.K. Pullius, minister of the Central Church of Christ, officiating. Burial was in the Mountain View cemetery.
