Suspect In Jackson County Murder Apprehended After Police Get Tip
Jackson County Bureau

The first person arrested by Jackson County sheriff's deputies in 1981 was Alpha Omega Paitsel III of Salem, Va., charged with capital murder in the slaying and robbery of Dan T. Matheny, 61, of Ocean Springs Tuesday.
Paitsel, 24, was arrested as he slept under the Harrison County Industrial Seaway bridge on Lorraine Road in Gulfport at 1 a. m. Thursday after investigators were contacted by a man whom Paitsel had allegedly told about the murder.
Investigator Jackie Walker with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department said the Gulfport man who told officers of Paitsel's story said he had not taken it seriously until he heard that a man's body had been found in Jackson County.
Working on information about Paitsel's usual whereabouts, Walker said, the suspect was taken into custody with cooperation of Gulfport police.
Matheny's body had been discovered about 10 a. m. Wednesday by a motorist in a wooded area adjoining the roadside park on U. S. 90, east of Miss. 57. Investigators said his throat had been slit.
Later Deputy Paul Herrington found Matheny's car, which had been driven into a ditch near the eastbound lane at the intersection of Miss. 57 and U. S. 90. Witnesses said the car had been left there about 8:30 p. m. Tuesday.
Due to blood stains found in the car, Walker said, deputies at first thought Matheny had been killed elsewhere and then left in the woods. After an intensive investigation, however, they have determined that the murder took place at the spot where the body was found.
Walker said authorities believe Matheny, a self-employed tailor, was en route from a job in Gulfport sometime after 5:30 p. m. Tuesday when he picked up Paitsel, who was hitchhiking near the Lorraine Road-I-10 interchange.
Walker said Paitsel and a friend had come to the Coast on Christmas Eve and were planning to leave the area this week to go to Louisiana to look for work.
Paitsel is being held without bond in Jackson County Jail. A date for a preliminary hearing has not been set.
