Elling Engebretson served in the Minnesota 5th Volunteer Infantry, Company A during the Civil War. He enlisted on January 25, 1862, and re-enlisted as a veteran on February 13, 1864. He was discharged with his unit at the end of the Civil War on September 6, 1865.
Elling married Siri Gulbrandsdatter (Sarah Gilbertson) on February 16, 1866. Their children were: Edward, Ena Marie (Geist), Malina (Engberg), Mary (Mattson), Julia (Mullen), Ole and Minnie (Gorman).
