Known as ELAINE, she was born in an Idaho forest ranger look-out tower and then grew up in Oroville, WA with her parents, an older brother, Robert Fears, and an older sister, Kay Fears. She married Paul F. Austin from Spokane, WA May 29, 1941. They moved to Vallejo, CA and had two children, a son, Patrick Wayne (1948-1948) and a daughter (1942-).

Divorced in 1958, she married Leo Mondragon 19 July 1958, and they moved to Campbell, CA. Leo's 3 boys by his first marriage lived with them over the years. She opened her heart to all three. Elaine and Leo enjoyed a long happy marriage until her death from cancer.

She learned to play the accordion in the 1940s and continued to play at family parties and for her own enjoyment. "Mockingbird Hill" could often be heard when you walked up to the house.

Her favorite color was lavender and her favorite flower, Sterling Silver rose, the first commercial lavender rose. The garden had many rose plants and irises. Visitors were often sent home with a bouquet.

During her lifetime she worked as a waitress, cafe owner and catering manager. She retired after working many years at the Los Gatos Lodge in Los Gatos, CA.

She and Leo loved golf, bowling, dude ranches, and entertaining. She loved to read, garden, paint, sew, needlework and travel with gals from work. She was a great cook and her spaghetti and garlic bread was an often requested meal by the family.

She will always be remembered as a caring mother and a friend to all those who met her.
