Charles William Dart, who was born Feb. 5, 1922 in Proctor, passed away Mon., Mar. 20, 2006 in Manley Hot Springs, Alaska. He was 84.

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Chuck applied to the War Manpower Board to work on the Alaska Highway. He also worked in a refinery in Whitehorse and then in Amchitka. After the war, Chuck attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks where he met Gladys Reed. They were married Sept. 8, 1950, in Tok. The couple finished their college education at Chico State. in 1955 they returned to Fairbanks with their three children and Gladys took a teaching job. Shortly afterward the Darts purchased the hot springs in Manley Hot Springs where they have lived ever since. Chuck helped Gladys reopen a school there in 1958. He provided the janitorial and maintenance services in the small log cabin and refueled the Coleman lanterns for light and organized the Blazo boxes used for students' desks. The second school was held in the "plastic" house that Chuck built and heated with water from the hot springs. He served as a delegate to the Democratic Party in the 1960s. His strong advocacy for equal rights, education, union issues, Native claims, rural and community issues continued throughout his lifetime. Chuck loved to travel and take photographs. His favorite interest was the time he spent in Kaktovik with a friend photographing polar bears. He was just as passionate about the land around him. The Hot Springs Greenhouses yielded the finest tomatoes in the state. Chuck and his sons had gold claims in the Tofty area. He was an integral part of the Hot Springs community, he will be missed "indeed."

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jack and also by his brother Robert L. Dart, who died on the same day (March 20) in 1982, a sister Harriet, and his daughter and son-in-law Diane and Dan Atkins.

He is survived by his wife Gladys, sons and daughter-in-law John Dart and Jim and Liza Dart of Alaska, granddaughters Corinna and Ilona, sister-in-law Gloria Dart of Proctor, and many other family members and friends.
