Mark’s cremated remains were not initially taken after his death and were stored for many years at the Oregon State Hospital to be claimed by anyone who was related. In 2015 his ashes were claimed and his family interred him at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.

Mark was born in 1880 in Williamson County in southern Illinois to Alonzo Pulaski Baker and Martha “Mattie” Jane Mathena. Both parents were born in Tennessee. Alonzo was born in 1848 and Mattie in 1850. Mark’s father served for the Union during the Civil War in the 127th Illinois Infantry. Alonzo and Martha were married in 1869 and Alonzo studied at the Cincinnati Medical College and became a physician in 1875.

Mark’s full siblings (all born in Illinois) include Griffin Jonathan (born in 1870), Miles David (in 1874), Virgil Aaron S. (in 1876), and Elzeda (in 1878).

During the census of 1880, Mark was an infant living with his parents and siblings in Williamson County, Illinois. His father was a physician. Mark’s mother died on 8/7/1885 in Williamson County. She was 35 and Mark was just 5 years old. Mark’s father remarried almost immediately. His new wife’ was Elizabeth Day. Mark’s half-sister Bernice was born in Illinois about 1886. At the time of the 1900 census Mark was living with his father, step-mother and two sisters. He achieved two years of college.

Mark married Bessie Anne Caswell in 1903. She was born in Canada in 1880 and she immigrated to the US in the 1890s. Their children included Albert C. “Jack” (born in Illinois in 1903), Andrew Osteen (Illinois in 1905), Donald Marcus (Illinois in 1907), Clifford Alonzo (California in 1914), Elizabeth “Bessie” (Utah about 1917), and Robert Stanley (Canada in 1921).

In the census of 1910 Mark, Bessie and their first 3 sons lived in Turlock, Stanislaus, California where Mark was an alfalfa farmer. In 1918 the family moved to Bertawan, Alberta, Canada where Mark was a farmer. They appeared in the 1921 Canadian census. Bessie and the children were listed as Presbyterians while Mark was a Baptist.

His step-mother died in 1919 in Illinois. His half-sister Bernice was living with her father in 1920. His brother Dr. Griffin Baker died in Illinois in 1925. On 5/21/1926 Mark’s father died of heart disease and asthma in Williamson County, Illinois. His sister Elzeda Baker married John William Ashbury and died in 1928 in Illinois. Brother Virgil died in 1930 in Illinois.

During the census of 1930 Mark and his family were living in Salem, Marion, Oregon and Mark was working in a paper mill. In 1939 brother Dr. Miles Baker died in Florida. Mark and his family were in Salem in the census of 1940. At that time Mark was a janitor in the local court house.

On 8/5/1948 he was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. Two years later he died of a heart attack at the institution on 10/1/1950. son Jack died in 1953. Son Donald died in 1955 in Oregon and son Clifford died in 1956. Mark’s wife Bessie died in August 1980 at the age of 100. Son Robert died in 1988. Son Colonel Andrew died in 1998 in Oregon. At least two of Mark's sons were in the military and Mark himself was a veteran of the Spanish American War.
